What is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?
The Social Security Administration website describes Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) as a benefit payed to you and certain members of your family if you are worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.1 If you or your spouse, have worked for 10 years, or accrued 40 work credits and then became disabled, then you may qualify for SSDI. Additional information on how the work credits are calculated for SSDI and other qualifications can be found on the official Social Security Administration website: https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/disability/qualify.html
What is Medicare?
Medicare is the United States’ federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD), and certain younger people with disabilities.2 There are many “Parts” and “Plans” associated with Medicare that cover hospital insurance (Part A), Medical Insurance (Part B), prescription drugs (Part D) as well as Advantage plans (often referred to as Part C) and Medicare supplemental insurance plans. Navigating the Medicare maze can be overwhelming so we always invite those needing help with Medicare to speak to a qualified Medicare agent.
SSDI and Qualifying for Medicare Early
If you have been on SSDI for two or more years you may qualify for Medicare before age 65. SSDI opens up your initial enrollment period for a Medicare advantage plan. The SSDI start date for those two years would actually be the date of first application. As an example for 2021, if a person applied for social security disability in January of 2019 and was denied, then applied again in January of 2020 and was approved, the beginning date would be retroactive to the first application date of January 2019.
